The 2017 Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leadership election was held to select a new leader after the resignation of Mike Nesbitt. Nesbitt stepped down on 6 May 2017, following the party’s poor performance in the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly election, in which it secured only 10 seats.
Election timetable and procedure
- Nomination deadline: Candidates had to be nominated by 13 June 2017.
- Voting system: The election used a one‑member‑one‑vote (OMOV) postal ballot of the party’s registered members.
Declared candidates
- Robin Swann – Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim and former Minister for Social Development.
- John Miller – Former MLA for South Antrim (initially nominated but withdrew before the ballot).
Prior to the ballot, John Miller withdrew his candidacy, leaving Robin Swann as the sole nominee. Consequently, Swann was elected unopposed.

Significance
Robin Swann’s election marked his first term as leader of the UUP.
