2016–17 Top League

The 2016–17 Top League was the 14th season of the Japan Rugby Top League, the highest professional rugby union competition in Japan. The season ran from August 26, 2016, to January 28, 2017. The competition featured 16 teams competing for the championship title.

Overview

The Top League is organized by the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU). The 2016–17 season continued to build on the league's growing popularity, especially following Japan's impressive performance at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The season maintained a 16-team format, a structure that had been consistent for several years.

Format

The season consisted of two main stages:

  • Regular Season: All 16 teams played each other once in a single round-robin format, resulting in 15 matches for each team. Teams were awarded 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 bonus point for scoring 4 tries or more, and 1 bonus point for losing by 7 points or less.
  • Playoffs:
    • Japan Rugby Championship: The top four teams from the regular season advanced to a knockout playoff system (semi-finals and a final) to determine the league champion. The final of this championship also served as the final of the 54th Japan Rugby Championship, effectively making the Top League winner also the national champion.
    • Ranking Playoffs: Teams ranked 5th through 16th participated in separate playoff brackets to determine their final league positions (5th-8th, 9th-12th, 13th-16th).
    • Relegation/Promotion Playoffs: The teams finishing 13th and 14th in the Top League played a promotion/relegation playoff against the 3rd and 2nd placed teams from the Top Challenge League (the second division), respectively. The 15th and 16th placed Top League teams were automatically relegated to the Top Challenge League.
