Overview
The 2016–17 SHL season was the 42nd season of Sweden's premier ice‑hockey league, the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Fourteen teams contested the regular season, which commenced on 15 September 2016 and concluded on 19 March 2017. The postseason, known as the SHL playoffs, determined the league champion and ran from 23 March to 26 April 2017.
Teams
All fourteen clubs from the previous 2015–16 season returned for the 2016–17 campaign: Frölunda HC, HV71, Luleå HF, Skellefteå AIK, Brynäs IF, Linköping HC, Djurgårdens IF, Växjö Lakers, Färjestad BK, Örebro HK, Malmö Redhawks, Mora IK, Rögle BK, and Timrå IK.
Regular season
The regular‑season schedule comprised 52 games per team. Skellefteå AIK finished first in the standings, earning the league’s regular‑season title (the "Le Mat" trophy for the regular‑season leader).
