Definition
The 2015–16 Russian Cup was the 24th edition of Russia’s annual knockout football (soccer) tournament, organized by the Russian Football Union (RFU) for clubs from the Russian Premier League, the National Football League, the Professional Football League, and qualifying amateur teams.
Overview
The competition began in the summer of 2015 with preliminary rounds involving lower‑division clubs. As the tournament progressed, teams from higher divisions entered in later stages, culminating in a single‑match final held on 2 May 2016 at the Central Stadium in Astrakhan. Zenit Saint Petersburg emerged as champions, defeating Krylia Sovetov Samara 1–0 after extra time. The victory secured Zenit a place in the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League group stage. Across the season, more than 90 matches were played, with participation from over 100 clubs representing the full spectrum of Russian football.
Etymology/Origin
The term “Russian Cup” follows the conventional naming of national knockout football competitions, where “cup” denotes a trophy awarded to the winner of a single‑elimination tournament. The Russian Cup itself was established in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, succeeding the Soviet Cup as the premier domestic cup competition in the newly independent Russian Federation.
Characteristics
- Format: Single‑elimination (knockout) matches. Early rounds are contested over a single leg; the semi‑finals are also single‑leg fixtures. In the event of a draw after regulation time, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot‑out determine the winner.
- Eligibility: Open to all professional clubs affiliated with the RFU and selected amateur sides that meet qualification criteria set by the federation.
- Scheduling: Matches are spread throughout the Russian football calendar, typically beginning in July/August and concluding in May of the following year.
- European Qualification: The cup winner earns a berth in the UEFA Europa League for the subsequent season, unless the club has already qualified for European competition via league position, in which case the spot is transferred according to RFU regulations.
- Prize Money: The RFU allocates financial rewards to participating clubs, with increasing sums awarded at each successive round, culminating in a larger prize for the champion.
