Competition format
- Qualification: Athletes were divided into two qualification groups. Automatic qualification for the final required a throw of at least 71.00 metres (Q). If fewer than 12 athletes achieved the automatic standard, the next best performers (q) were added to bring the total of finalists to 12.
- Final: The 12 qualifiers each received three initial throws. The top eight after these attempts were granted three additional throws. The longest legal throw of any round determined the final ranking.
