The 2014 Enugu State Broadcasting Service attack refers to a security incident that occurred on March 8, 2014, in Enugu, Nigeria. During the early morning hours, members of a secessionist group known as the Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF), also referred to as the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), invaded the premises of the state-owned Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS).
The group, led by Benjamin Igwe Onwuka, aimed to seize the radio station to broadcast a formal declaration of independence for the Republic of Biafra. Members of the group arrived at the station’s headquarters in the Independence Layout area equipped with various items, including flags and prepared scripts for the announcement.
The attempt was intercepted by the Nigeria Police Force. The resulting confrontation led to the deaths of at least two individuals: one police officer and one member of the BZF. Security forces successfully prevented the broadcast and arrested several participants, including the group’s leader, Benjamin Onwuka.
Following the incident, the Nigerian government and state authorities categorized the attack as an act of treason and a breach of national security. The arrested individuals were subsequently charged with offenses related to the attempted overthrow of the government and the disruption of public peace.
