Definition
The 2006–07 Liga Gimel was the fifth tier of the Israeli football league system for the 2006–2007 season. It functioned as the lowest nationwide division under the jurisdiction of the Israel Football Association (IFA), with clubs competing for promotion to Liga Bet.
Overview
The competition was organized on a regional basis, with clubs grouped into multiple divisions that reflected geographic areas of Israel (e.g., Upper Galilee, Lower Galilee, Jezreel, Samaria, Sharon, Tel Aviv, Central, and South). Each division operated a round‑robin schedule, and the winner of each regional division earned promotion to the 2006–07 Liga Bet. Because Liga Gimel is the bottom tier, there was no relegation to a lower national division; clubs that finished at the bottom simply remained in Liga Gimel for the following season. The league was largely amateur, with most participating clubs having limited financial resources and relying on local sponsorship and community support.
Etymology / Origin
The term Liga is Hebrew for “league.” Gimel is the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet and is traditionally used in Israeli football to denote lower tiers; historically, Liga Gimel represented the third level of competition, but after successive restructurings of the league system it became the fifth level.
Characteristics

- Regional organization: Divisions are arranged geographically to reduce travel costs and foster local rivalries.
- Promotion: Division champions are automatically promoted to Liga Bet, the fourth tier.
- No relegation: As the lowest national division, clubs cannot be relegated to a lower football tier within the IFA structure.
- Season schedule: The season generally ran from late summer/early autumn 2006 through spring 2007, mirroring the calendar used by higher divisions.
