2005 Superettan

The 2005 Superettan was the sixth season of Superettan, the second-highest division in the Swedish football league system, established in 2000. The season began on April 16, 2005, and concluded on October 23, 2005.

Overview

The 2005 season featured 16 teams competing in a double round-robin format, playing each other twice for a total of 30 matches per team. The primary objective for the clubs was to gain promotion to Allsvenskan, the top-tier league in Sweden, or to avoid relegation to Division 2 (the third tier).

Promotion and Relegation

Promotion to Allsvenskan:

  • The top two teams, AIK and Östers IF, were directly promoted to the 2006 Allsvenskan season.

Promotion Playoff:

  • The third-placed team, GAIS, qualified for a promotion playoff against the 14th-placed team from the 2005 Allsvenskan, Landskrona BoIS. GAIS won the playoff (2-1 on aggregate) and was also promoted to Allsvenskan.

Relegation to Division 2:

  • The bottom two teams, Västerås SK and Västra Frölunda IF, were directly relegated to Division 2 for the 2006 season.

Relegation Playoff:

  • The 13th-placed team, Degerfors IF, and the 14th-placed team, Mjällby AIF, faced relegation playoffs against runners-up from various Division 2 leagues.
    • Degerfors IF won their playoff and retained their Superettan status.
    • Mjällby AIF won their playoff and also retained their Superettan status.

Top Scorer

The top scorer for the 2005 Superettan season was Bruno Santos of IFK Norrköping, with 16 goals.
