The 2005 Primera A refers to the season of Colombia's top professional football league, officially known as the Categoría Primera A (often abbreviated as Primera A). It was the 58th season of the league since its establishment in 1948.
Overview
Like previous and subsequent seasons, the 2005 Primera A was divided into two independent tournaments: the Torneo Apertura (opening tournament) and the Torneo Finalización (closing tournament). Each tournament crowned its own champion. The league featured 18 participating teams.
Format
Both the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Finalización followed a similar structure:
- Regular Season: All 18 teams played each other once (17 matches) in a single round-robin format. The top eight teams advanced to the next stage.
- Semi-final Stage (Cuadrangulares Semi-finales): The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four. Teams played each other twice within their group (home and away). The winner of each group advanced to the final.
- Final: The two group winners played a two-legged final (home and away) to determine the tournament champion.
Torneo Apertura 2005
- Period: February to June 2005
- Winner: Atlético Nacional
- Runner-up: Deportivo Cali
- Key Event: Atlético Nacional secured their eighth league title by defeating Deportivo Cali in the final, with a 2-0 aggregate score.
Torneo Finalización 2005
- Period: July to December 2005
- Winner: Deportivo Cali
- Runner-up: Real Cartagena
- Key Event: Deportivo Cali claimed their ninth league title by overcoming Real Cartagena in the final. The aggregate score was 2-0 in favor of Deportivo Cali.
Relegation and Promotion
Relegation and promotion in the Categoría Primera A were determined by an average points system over the last three seasons. At the end of the 2005 season, the two teams with the lowest average points were relegated to the Categoría Primera B (second division), while two teams from the Primera B were promoted for the 2006 season. For the 2005 season, Cúcuta Deportivo and Deportivo Pereira were involved in the promotion/relegation play-offs, with Deportivo Pereira eventually retaining its spot and Cúcuta Deportivo winning promotion.
Significance
The 2005 season saw two distinct champions, reflecting the competitive nature of Colombian football. Atlético Nacional's Apertura victory solidified their status as one of the most successful clubs in Colombia, while Deportivo Cali's Finalización win marked another significant achievement in their history. The league continued to be a major source of talent for international football and a central part of Colombian sports culture.
