24 April – Referendum on the Annan Plan
A United Nations‑sponsored proposal for the reunification of Cyprus, known as the Annan Plan, was put to simultaneous referendums in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Approximately 76 percent of Turkish Cypriot voters approved the plan, while about 76 percent of Greek Cypriot voters rejected it, resulting in the plan’s overall failure. -
1 May – European Union Accession
The Republic of Cyprus officially became the 10th member state of the European Union. The accession granted Cyprus participation in EU institutions and the application of the acquis communautaire, although the EU acquis was suspended in the northern part of the island not under the control of the Republic. -
August – 2004 Summer Olympic Games (Athens)
Cyprus competed in the Athens Olympics, sending a delegation of athletes who participated in athletics, swimming, judo, shooting, and sailing. No medals were won. -
September – European Parliament Elections
Cyprus held its first election to the European Parliament as an EU member state. Six Cyprus‑allocated seats were contested, with the Democratic Rally (DISY) and the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) winning the largest shares of the vote. -
23 October – Opening of the New Limassol Port Facility
The expanded and modernised facilities at the Port of Limassol were officially inaugurated, enhancing Cyprus’s capacity for container traffic and cruise ship docking.

Cypriot First Division (2003–04 season)
APOEL FC secured the league championship, earning qualification for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. -
Cyprus Cup (football)
The annual domestic cup competition was won by Omonia Nicosia, defeating Anorthosis Famagusta in the final. -
Cyprus Marathon
