2002–03 DEL season

The 2002–03 DEL season was the ninth season of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), the premier professional ice‑hockey league in Germany. The campaign ran from early September 2002 through April 2003 and featured fourteen clubs competing in a regular‑season schedule followed by a postseason playoff to determine the league champion.

Teams
Fourteen teams participated, representing a range of German cities: Adler Mannheim, Augsburger Panther, Berlin Eisbären, Cologne Haie, Frankfurt Löwen, Hamburg Freezers, Hannover Scorpions, Kassel LearJets, Krefeld Pinguine, Munich Barons, Nürnberg Ice Tigers, Schwenninger Wild Wings, and two additional clubs that were members of the league at that time.

Regular season
Each team played a balanced schedule of home and away games, accumulating points according to the league’s standard system (three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime/shootout win, one point for an overtime/shootout loss, and zero points for a regulation loss). The final standings determined the seeding for the postseason.

Playoffs
The top eight teams advanced to the quarter‑finals, which were contested in best‑of‑five series. Winners progressed to best‑of‑seven semi‑finals and finals.

Krefeld Pinguine captured the DEL title, defeating Berlin Eisbären in the championship series. It was Krefeld’s first league championship since the formation of the DEL.
