2-Bromo-4,5-methylenedioxyamphetamine

2-Bromo-4,5-methylenedioxyamphetamine (also known as 6-bromo-MDA, 6-Br-MDA, or 2-bromo-4,5-MDA) is a psychoactive drug belonging to the phenethylamine, amphetamine, and MDxx families. It is structurally related to 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), with a bromine atom substituted at the 6-position of the aromatic ring (alternatively numbered as the 2-position).

History

The compound was first described in the scientific literature by Silvia Sepúlveda and colleagues in 1972. It was later described in greater detail by Alexander Shulgin in his 1991 book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved).

Pharmacology and Effects

In PiHKAL, Shulgin listed the oral dosage as 350 mg and the duration as unknown. The compound has been reported to produce amphetamine-like effects, though few details are available. However, researcher Daniel Trachsel reported that 6-bromo-MDA was inactive at doses of up to 350 mg. Very little data exists regarding its pharmacological properties, metabolism, or toxicity.

Synthesis

The chemical synthesis involves treating a solution of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) in acetic acid with elemental bromine, generating the hydrobromide salt of 2-bromo-4,5-methylenedioxyamphetamine.
