The 1996–97 League of Wales was the fifth season of the top‑flight football competition in Wales, known at the time as the League of Wales (later rebranded the Cymru Premier). The season ran from August 1996 to May 1997 and featured twenty clubs competing in a double round‑robin format, with each team playing 38 matches.

Barry Town A.F.C. secured the league title, marking their fourth consecutive championship since the league’s inception in 1992. By winning the league, Barry Town qualified for the 1997–98 UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League). The league’s runners‑up, Cwmbran Town, qualified for the 1997–98 UEFA Intertoto Cup.
