1996 Dura Lube 200

The 1996 Dura Lube 200 was a professional open-wheel auto race sanctioned by the Indy Racing League (IRL), held on March 24, 1996, at the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. The event served as the second race of the inaugural 1996 Indy Racing League season.

The race was contested over 200 laps on a 1-mile (1.6 km) paved oval track, covering a total distance of 200 miles. Arie Luyendyk, driving for Byrd/Treadway Racing, won the event, finishing ahead of second-place driver Mike Groff. Richie Hearn, who started on the pole position, finished fourth. The race is historically significant as part of the first season following the formal split between the IRL and the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) series.

The "Dura Lube 200" title was the result of a commercial sponsorship agreement with Dura Lube, a manufacturer of engine treatment products. During the 1996 racing season, Dura Lube also provided sponsorship for other motorsport events, including the NASCAR Busch Series "Dura Lube Kmart 200" (also held at Phoenix International Raceway) and the NASCAR Winston Cup Series "Dura Lube 500." However, the "1996 Dura Lube 200" specifically identifies the March IRL event.
