The team started the season with four consecutive wins, rising to No. 24 in the AP Poll before a loss to Georgia Tech. After a win at Wake Forest, the Terrapins suffered a three-game losing streak (shut out by both Clemson and Louisville) before rebounding with a win at NC State. The season ended with narrow losses to No. 14 Virginia and No. 6 Florida State.
Notable players on the roster included quarterback Brian Cummings, wide receiver Jermaine Lewis (who also contributed on special teams with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown against NC State), running back Buddy Rodgers, quarterback Scott Milanovich, and defensive end Eric Ogbogu.
