1986 K League

The 1986 K League was the fourth season of the professional football league in South Korea, then officially known as the Korean Super League. The season ran from March 8 to November 2, 1986. It featured five participating clubs and employed a two-stage format, culminating in a championship final between the winners of each stage.

Overview

The 1986 season saw a continuation of the Super League's growth, though the number of teams remained constant at five. The league aimed to increase competitive balance and public interest by splitting the season into two distinct halves, each with its own winner.

Participating Teams

The five clubs that competed in the 1986 K League were:

  • Daewoo Royals (Busan)
  • Hyundai Horang-i (Ulsan)
  • Lucky-Goldstar Hwangso (Seoul)
  • POSCO Atoms (Pohang)
  • Yukong Elephants (Seoul)

Competition Format

The season was divided into two stages: the First Stage and the Second Stage. Each stage consisted of a double round-robin format, meaning every team played every other team twice (once home, once away) within that stage. Points were awarded as follows: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Goal difference was used as a tie-breaker.

The winners of the First Stage and the Second Stage would then proceed to a Championship Final. If the same team won both stages, they would automatically be declared the league champions without a final match.
