1984–85 Austrian Cup

The 1984–85 Austrian Cup (German: ÖFB‑Cup 1984/85) was the 51st edition of Austria’s premier knockout football competition. The tournament was organized by the Austrian Football Association (Österreichischer Fußball-Bund, ÖFB) and featured clubs from the top tiers of Austrian football together with qualifying teams from lower divisions.

Overview

  • Season: 1984–85
  • Number of participating clubs: 64 (including clubs from the Austrian Bundesliga, First League, and regional qualifiers)
  • Competition format: Single‑elimination matches; ties were decided by extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot‑out.
  • Duration: The competition commenced in the summer of 1984 and concluded with the final in late May 1985.

Progress of the tournament
Early rounds were regionalised to reduce travel burdens for lower‑division clubs. Winners progressed through the round of 32, round of 16, quarter‑finals, and semi‑finals. The semi‑finals produced two final‑stage clubs:

  • SK Rapid Wien
  • FK Austria Wien

Final
The championship match was held on 31 May 1985 at the Praterstadion (now Ernst‑Happel‑Stadion) in Vienna. SK Rapid Wien emerged as the cup champions, securing the club’s ninth Austrian Cup title. FK Austria Wien finished as runners‑up.

Significance
The victory completed a domestic double for SK Rapid Wien, as the club also captured the 1984–85 Austrian Bundesliga championship. The cup win reinforced Rapid’s status as one of Austria’s historically dominant football institutions.

Aftermath
As cup winners, SK Rapid Wien qualified for the 1985–86 European Cup Winners’ Cup, representing Austria in continental competition.
