1973 Belgian Grand Prix

The 1973 Belgian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 22 May 1973 at the Circuit Zolder in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium. It was the sixth round of the 1973 World Championship of Drivers and the 1973 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. The race was contested over 70 laps of the 4.262‑kilometre (2.649‑mile) permanent racing facility, covering a total distance of 298.34 kilometres (185.43 miles).

Background
The Belgian Grand Prix returned to Zolder in 1973 after the previous year’s race had been cancelled due to the oil crisis. The event was part of a tightly contested championship season, with several drivers and teams still mathematically eligible for the titles.

Qualifying
Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell-Ford) secured pole position with a lap time of 1:28.22. He was joined on the front row by Emerson Fittipaldi (Lotus-Ford) and François Cevert (Tyrrell-Ford). The qualifying session saw a range of competitive times across the field, with most of the top ten qualifiers driving for the leading manufacturers: Ferrari, McLaren, and BRM.

Race summary
At the start, Stewart retained his lead into the first corner, while Fittipaldi and Cevert followed closely. Early in the race, Stewart suffered a puncture on lap 12, forcing an unscheduled pit stop and dropping him to the middle of the pack. This incident opened the way for Fittipaldi to inherit the lead. Fittipaldi managed his pace and fuel consumption effectively, building a gap over his rivals.

Mechanical failures affected several contenders: Jo Siffert (BRM) retired with a gearbox problem on lap 18, and Chris Amon (Ferrari) suffered an engine failure on lap 32. The battle for podium positions centred on Jackie Stewart, who after his pit stop fought back through the field, and Ronnie Peterson (Lotus-Ford), who maintained a consistent pace.

Emerson Fittipaldi maintained the lead to the checkered flag, securing his second victory of the season. Jackie Stewart recovered to finish second, while Ronnie Peterson completed the podium in third place.
