1973 Allsvenskan

The 1973 Allsvenskan was the 49th season of the Allsvenskan, the highest-tier football league in Sweden. The season commenced on April 14, 1973, and concluded on October 28, 1973. Åtvidabergs FF successfully defended their title, securing their second consecutive and second overall Swedish championship.

Overview

The 1973 Allsvenskan featured 12 teams competing in a double round-robin format, meaning each team played every other team twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 matches per team. Points were awarded as two for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season was crowned champion. The two teams finishing at the bottom of the table were relegated to Division 2.

Season Summary

Champions: Åtvidabergs FF clinched the title with a strong performance throughout the season, finishing three points ahead of second-placed Malmö FF. This marked a significant period for the club, as it was their second Allsvenskan title in a row.

Relegation: At the conclusion of the season, Örgryte IS and Halmstads BK finished in the bottom two positions and were consequently relegated to Division 2 for the 1974 season.

Promotion: Brynäs IF and GIF Sundsvall were promoted from Division 2 to participate in the 1974 Allsvenskan.
