1951–52 Serie A

Definition
The 1951–52 Serie A was the 49th season of Italy’s premier football league, Serie A, contested by twenty clubs in a double‑round‑robin format. The competition ran from 2 September 1951 to 13 April 1952.

Overview

  • Champion: Juventus F.C., securing their seventh Scudetto.
  • Runners‑up: AC Milan finished second, followed closely by Internazionale.
  • Top scorer: Gunnar Nordahl (AC Milan) with 27 goals.
  • Matches played: 380 (each of the 20 teams played 38 matches).
  • Total goals: 1,225, averaging 3.22 goals per match.
  • Relegation: The bottom two clubs, Lucchese and Napoli, were relegated to Serie B.
  • Point system: Two points were awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss.

The season was notable for Juventus’s dominant defensive record, conceding only 27 goals, and for the prolific scoring of Nordahl, who was the first foreign player to win the Capocannoniere (top‑scorer) award in Serie A.

Etymology/Origin

  • Serie A: The term “Serie” derives from the Italian word for “series” or “division,” while the letter “A” designates the top tier of the national league hierarchy. The Serie A format was introduced in 1929, replacing the earlier regional championship system.
  • 1951–52: Football seasons in Europe traditionally span two calendar years, beginning in late summer or early autumn and concluding in spring; the hyphenated dates indicate this period.

Characteristics

  • Competition format: Each club played every other club twice (home and away).
  • Scoring and ranking: Teams were ranked by total points; goal difference was not used as a tiebreaker until later decades.
  • Broadcast and media: Matches were primarily covered by radio and newspaper; television coverage was limited.
  • Stadiums: Games were held in historic venues such as the Stadio San Siro (Milan), Stadio delle Alpi (Turin), and Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
  • Regulatory body: The league was overseen by the Lega Calcio (now Lega Serie A).
