1951 Asian Games

Definition
The 1951 Asian Games, officially known as the First Asian Games, were a multi‑sport event held from 4 to 11 March 1951 in New Delhi, India. It marked the inaugural edition of the Asian Games, a continental competition organized under the auspices of the Asian Games Federation (now the Olympic Council of Asia).

Overview
The Games featured athletes from eleven nations competing in a total of 57 events across eight sports: athletics, aquatics (swimming and diving), basketball, football, hockey, boxing, weightlifting, and wrestling. India, as the host nation, topped the medal table with 15 gold, 16 silver, and 20 bronze medals, followed by Japan and the Republic of China (Taiwan). The opening ceremony was attended by then‑Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito (as a special emissary). The event was conducted at venues such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the National Stadium in New Delhi.

Etymology/Origin
The term “Asian Games” derives from the English word “games,” referring to organized sporting competitions, combined with “Asian,” denoting the continental scope of the participants. The 1951 edition was named according to its year of occurrence, a convention later adopted for subsequent editions (e.g., 1954 Asian Games, 1958 Asian Games).

Characteristics

  • Participating Nations: 11 (Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of China).
  • Sports Program: Limited to eight sports, reflecting the logistical capacities of the host and the developmental stage of organized sport in Asia at the time.
  • Organising Body: The Asian Games Federation (AGF), established in 1949 to promote regional cooperation through sports.
  • Legacy: The successful execution of the 1951 Games laid the foundation for the biennial (later quadrennial) Asian Games, contributing to the growth of sport in Asia and fostering diplomatic relations among participating nations.
