1942–43 Serie A

The 1942–43 Serie A was the 43rd season of the top-tier Italian football league, and the 14th season played under the single national round-robin format. It holds significant historical importance as the last full professional football championship held in Italy before its suspension due to the escalating events of World War II.

Overview The season commenced on 4 October 1942 and concluded on 25 April 1943. Sixteen teams participated in the league, playing each other twice (home and away) for a total of 30 matches. The championship was won by Torino, securing their second Scudetto (national title). This victory marked the beginning of the legendary "Grande Torino" era, a period of unprecedented dominance for the club in Italian football.

Impact of World War II As Italy was deeply embroiled in World War II, the season was played under increasingly challenging conditions. Despite the ongoing conflict and its societal impact, the league managed to complete its entire schedule. However, the deteriorating military situation, particularly following the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943 and the subsequent armistice in September 1943, led to the immediate cessation of organized national football. The Serie A would not officially resume until the 1945–46 season, and even then, it adopted a modified, regionalized format. An unofficial, war-time championship, the Campionato Alta Italia 1944, was played in German-occupied Northern Italy, but its title is not officially recognized by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as a Serie A championship. The 1942–43 season therefore represents the end of an era for Italian football before a significant hiatus and restructuring.
