1942 Úrvalsdeild

The 1942 Úrvalsdeild was the 31st season of the Úrvalsdeild, the top tier of men’s association football in Iceland. The competition was contested during the calendar year 1942 and featured six clubs that played a double round‑robin format, each team facing every other club twice (once at home and once away).

Participating clubs

  • Knattspyrnufélagið Fram (Reykjavík)
  • Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (KR) (Reykjavík)
  • Valur (Reykjavík)
  • ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar
  • ÍA Akranes
  • Keflavík (Keflavík)

Season format
Each club earned two points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. The team with the highest point total at the conclusion of the ten‑match schedule was crowned champion. Goal difference was used as a tiebreaker only if teams were level on points.

Champion
Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (KR) secured the league title, recording the best overall record of the six competitors. This victory added to KR’s early dominance in Icelandic football; at the time, KR held the record for the most national championships.

Runner‑up and final standings
The final league table placed Fram as the runner‑up, followed by Valur, ÍBV, ÍA, and Keflavík in descending order. Detailed point totals, goals scored, and goal differences for each club are recorded in Icelandic football archives but are not reproduced here.

Historical context
The 1942 season took place during the Second World War, a period in which Iceland remained neutral but experienced increased Allied military presence. Despite the broader geopolitical situation, domestic football continued uninterrupted, and the Úrvalsdeild maintained its regular schedule.

Legacy
The 1942 campaign contributed to the continued development of Icelandic football, reinforcing the competitive structure that would later evolve into the modern Úrvalsdeild karla. KR’s triumph further cemented its status as a leading club in the nation’s early football history.
