Definition
The 1920–21 FA Cup, officially known as the Football Association Challenge Cup for the 1920–21 season, was the 50th edition of England’s premier annual knockout football competition.
Overview
The tournament began in November 1920 and concluded with the final held on 23 April 1921 at Stamford Bridge, London. A total of 125 clubs entered the competition, encompassing teams from the Football League First and Second Divisions as well as numerous non‑league sides. Tottenham Hotspur defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1–0 in the final, securing their first FA Cup triumph. The winning goal was scored by Jimmy Dimmock in the 55th minute.
The 1920–21 edition marked the first FA Cup played after the disruption caused by the First World War, with the competition resuming in 1919–20. Attendance at the final was recorded at 62,000 spectators.
Etymology/Origin
- FA: Acronym for the Football Association, the governing body that organizes the competition.
- Cup: Refers to the trophy awarded to the champion, historically a silver cup presented by the Marquis of Hertford in 1871.
- The year‑range “1920–21” denotes the football season spanning autumn 1920 through spring 1921, a standard convention for English football competitions.
Characteristics
- Format: Single‑elimination knockout with replays used to settle draws. If a replay also ended level, further replays were scheduled until a winner emerged; extra time was employed only in later stages.
- Entry: All 22 First Division clubs entered at the First Round Proper, while Second Division clubs entered in the same round; non‑league clubs qualified through preliminary and qualifying rounds.
- Match Rules: Standard association‑football rules of the era applied, including the off‑side rule (two‑player off‑side) and the use of a leather ball. Substitutions were not permitted.
- Notable Incidents: The competition featured several high‑scoring upsets, notably a 7–1 victory by non‑league side Leyton over a Second Division side in the Fifth Round. No semi‑final required a replay, a relatively uncommon occurrence for the period.
