The 1891–92 Football Alliance was the third and final season of the Football Alliance, a football competition in England that operated from 1889 to 1892 as a rival to the Football League. The season ran from September 1891 until April 1892.
Participating clubs
Twelve clubs contested the league. The membership for the 1891–92 season comprised the clubs that had been part of the Alliance in the previous season, with no new admissions recorded for that campaign.
Competition format
Each club played the others twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 matches per team. Points were awarded on the standard basis of two points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. The club with the highest point total at the end of the season was declared the champion.
Champions
Nottingham Forest finished the season as league champions. Their performance secured their election to the newly formed Football League Second Division when the Alliance merged with the Football League at the end of the 1891–92 campaign.
Merger and legacy
Following the conclusion of the 1891–92 season, the Football Alliance was absorbed by the Football League. The merger resulted in the creation of the Football League Second Division for the 1892–93 season, into which several Alliance clubs, including Nottingham Forest, were admitted. The integration of the Alliance clubs expanded the Football League’s geographic reach and contributed to the development of the English league system.
Historical significance
The 1891–92 Football Alliance season marked the end of an independent competition that had provided a platform for clubs outside the original Football League. Its absorption into the Football League system helped establish the hierarchical structure of English football that persists to the present day.
