The 1889 Kumamoto earthquake struck the Kumamoto region of Kyushu, Japan, on 14 April 1889 (Gregorian calendar) at approximately 08:40 local time. Contemporary seismological estimates place its magnitude in the range of 6.9–7.0 Mw (surface‑wave magnitude). The hypocenter was shallow, with an estimated depth of about 10 km beneath the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture.
