The year saw significant military setbacks for Sweden, particularly in Swedish Pomerania and Scania, as well as some minor successes. King [[Charles XI of Sweden]] continued to lead his armies personally.

Events

January–March

  • February: A Swedish force under [[Johan Göransson Gyllenstierna]] attempts an invasion of [[Jämtland]] (then part of [[Norway]]) from Sweden, aiming to divert Danish forces. The invasion proves largely unsuccessful and the Swedish troops soon withdraw.

April–June

  • June 29 – July 16: Danish forces besiege [[Helsingborg]] in [[Scania]]. The siege is ultimately unsuccessful, and the Danes are forced to retreat due to strong Swedish resistance and approaching relief forces.

July–September

  • July 22 – August 15: Danish forces under [[Christian V of Denmark]] successfully besiege and capture [[Kristianstad]] in northeastern Scania after a fierce resistance from the Swedish garrison. The fall of Kristianstad is a significant blow to Swedish control in Scania.
  • August: Following the fall of Kristianstad, Swedish forces consolidate their positions in Scania, preparing for further Danish advances.
  • September 22: The [[Battle of Bornholm (1678)]] takes place, a naval engagement between a Danish fleet and a Swedish squadron. The battle results in a Danish victory, although it does not significantly alter the overall naval balance of power.
  • September 23 – October 15: Brandenburg forces launch an invasion of [[Rügen]], landing troops and clashing with the Swedish defenders. The island's strategic importance as a staging ground for operations against Swedish Pomerania makes it a key objective.

October–December

  • October 20:
    • The [[Battle of Warksow]] takes place on Rügen, where Brandenburg forces decisively defeat the Swedish army, leading to the complete capture of the island by Brandenburg.
    • In a separate engagement, Swedish forces under [[Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie]] defeat a Danish force in the [[Battle of Uddevalla]], relieving the city of [[Uddevalla]] in [[Bohuslän]] and securing Swedish control of the region.
  • October 20 – November 17: The city of [[Stralsund]], a key Swedish stronghold in [[Swedish Pomerania]], is besieged by Brandenburg forces. After heavy bombardment, the city capitulates, marking a significant loss for Sweden in its German territories.
  • November 5 – November 17: The siege of [[Greifswald]] concludes with the surrender of the city to Brandenburg forces. This loss means that all of Swedish Pomerania, except for [[Wolgast]], is now under Brandenburg occupation.
  • December: King Charles XI attempts to retake Kristianstad from the Danes but is ultimately unsuccessful, reinforcing the Danish hold on the city.
