16–25 Railcard

The 16–25 Railcard is a discount card offered in Great Britain that provides a one-third reduction on most standard rail fares. It is primarily aimed at young people and full-time students to make train travel more affordable.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a 16–25 Railcard, an individual must:

  • Be aged between 16 and 25 years old, inclusive.
  • Be a mature student enrolled in full-time education, regardless of age. Full-time education is typically defined as attending a university, college, or school for at least 15 hours per week, for at least 20 weeks a year. Proof of student status is required for applicants over 25.

Benefits and Discounts

The primary benefit of the 16–25 Railcard is a 33% (one-third) discount on a wide range of rail tickets, including:

  • Standard Anytime tickets
  • Standard Off-Peak tickets
  • Standard Advance tickets
  • Some First Class Advance tickets
  • Standard Season tickets (on certain routes)
  • PlusBus tickets purchased with a train ticket
  • London Travelcards (when purchased as part of a National Rail ticket)

There are some restrictions, notably a minimum fare requirement for journeys made before 10:00 AM on weekdays (excluding public holidays and during July and August), which typically means the Railcard discount cannot be applied if the discounted fare falls below a set minimum.

Purchase and Validity

The 16–25 Railcard can be purchased online through the official Railcard website or at staffed railway station ticket offices. To purchase, applicants usually need to provide:

  • Proof of age (e.g., passport, driving licence, birth certificate).
  • A digital photo for the card.
  • Proof of student status if applying as a mature student.

Railcards are available for either a 1-year or 3-year validity period, offering a greater discount for the longer period. Both physical cards and digital versions (stored on a smartphone app) are available.

Usage

When travelling with a discounted ticket obtained using a 16–25 Railcard, the cardholder must carry the Railcard with them at all times during their journey. Failure to produce a valid Railcard upon request by railway staff can result in the requirement to pay the full, undiscounted fare for the journey, and potentially a penalty fare.

Purpose

The 16–25 Railcard scheme is designed to encourage younger individuals and students to use train travel by making it more economically accessible. It is part of a broader set of Railcard schemes aimed at different demographic groups in Great Britain, all working to promote rail usage.
