12 Regiment RLC was a regiment of the British Army's Royal Logistic Corps (RLC), active until its disbandment in 2013. It was a key component of the Army's logistic infrastructure, specifically tasked with providing dedicated support to airborne and air assault forces.
Role and Function The primary role of 12 Regiment RLC was to deliver comprehensive logistic support to 16 Air Assault Brigade, the British Army's rapid-response airborne formation. This specialised role encompassed:
- Supply: Providing essential materiel such as ammunition, fuel, food, and water.
- Transportation: Moving personnel and equipment, often utilising specialist vehicles and air-drop techniques.
- Maintenance: Repairing and maintaining equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Movement Control: Managing the flow of resources and personnel.
- Postal and Courier Services: Ensuring communication and supply lines were maintained.
Its specialisation required its personnel to be trained in airborne operations, enabling them to deploy alongside the forces they supported, often by parachute or helicopter, into demanding environments.
History The lineage of 12 Regiment RLC can be traced through various logistic units that supported airborne forces within the British Army. It was formally established as 12 Regiment RLC following the formation of the Royal Logistic Corps in 1993, which amalgamated several corps including the Royal Corps of Transport, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Pioneer Corps, Army Catering Corps, and the Postal and Courier Service of the Royal Engineers.
Throughout its existence, 12 Regiment RLC participated in numerous exercises and operational deployments globally, supporting British forces in conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Notable operational deployments included tours in Northern Ireland, the Balkans (e.g., Kosovo), Afghanistan, and Iraq, where its capabilities were vital for sustaining air assault operations.
Disbandment As part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review 2010 and the subsequent Army 2020 reorganisation plan, 12 Regiment RLC was disbanded in 2013. Its capabilities, personnel, and equipment were largely re-rolled into other units within the Royal Logistic Corps. A significant portion contributed to the formation of the enlarged 13 Air Assault Support Regiment RLC, which continued the tradition of providing specialist logistic support to 16 Air Assault Brigade. The disbandment marked the end of the regiment as a standalone unit, but its legacy of specialised airborne logistics support continued within the broader RLC.
