1001 (album)

1001 is an album by the American alternative rock band Dead Hot Workshop, released in 1995. It was the band's only album to be released through a major label, issued jointly by TAG Recordings and Atlantic Records.

Background and Production

The album was produced by Jim Scott. Its cover features a photograph of the Sun Club, a nightclub in Tempe, Arizona, where many local rock bands began their careers. To support the album, Dead Hot Workshop toured with fellow Arizona bands the Gin Blossoms and the Refreshments. The lead single from the album was the opening track, "A".

Critical Reception

Critical reception was moderately positive. Trouser Press praised Steve Larson's guitar playing as "dynamic—equal parts twang and bang," noting the sturdy rhythm section. The Houston Press described the album as having "the gritty, sandblasted edge the Blossoms lack" and called the single "A" "the great lost modern-rock single of 1995." The Wisconsin State Journal observed that Dead Hot Workshop "sounds significantly more raw and energetic" than the Gin Blossoms. The State called 1001 "full-on rock 'n' roll, the album R.E.M. wishes it could make." AllMusic characterized the album as "guitar-driven working-class rock & roll with a hint of country twang thrown in."
