Ždírec nad Doubravou is a town in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. It is situated in the Žďár nad Sázavou District, on the banks of the Doubrava River, approximately 25 km southeast of the regional capital Jihlava and 40 km northwest of Brno. As of the most recent census in 2023, the town had a population of about 7,200 inhabitants.

Geography
The town lies within the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, an area characterized by gently rolling hills, forested areas, and agricultural land. The Doubrava River, a tributary of the Jihlava River, flows through the town centre, contributing to the local landscape and historically providing water resources for industry and agriculture.

History
The first written mention of Ždírec dates to 1358, referencing the settlement in the context of land ownership by the local nobility. The name is derived from the Czech word “žďir” or “ždírek,” meaning a clearing or a place where trees have been cut, indicating the town’s origin as a cleared area in a forested region. In the late Middle Ages, the settlement developed as a market town, benefitting from its position along trade routes connecting Moravia and Bohemia.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, Ždírec experienced growth in craft production, particularly in textiles and woodworking. The town suffered damage during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) but was rebuilt in the subsequent decades. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway line linking Jihlava and Havlíčkův Brod spurred further economic development, facilitating the export of local products.

In 1998, Ždírec was granted town status by the Czech government, reflecting its administrative importance and population size. The designation “nad Doubravou” (meaning “upon Doubrava”) was added to distinguish it from other Czech localities named Ždírec.
