Ōe (大江町, Ōe‑machi) was a former municipality located in Higashitagawa District, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
Geography
Ōe occupied an area of 50.96 km² in the northern part of the prefecture, characterized by a mixed landscape of agricultural land and low‑lying hills.
Demographics
According to estimates from 2003, the town had a population of 8,215, yielding a population density of approximately 161.2 persons per km².
Administrative history
Ōe functioned as an independent town until the early 2000s, when a series of municipal mergers (the Heisei consolidation) were undertaken across Japan to improve administrative efficiency. On 1 October 2005, Ōe was merged into the expanded jurisdiction of the neighboring city of Yamagata, ceasing to exist as a separate municipality.
Economy and culture
The local economy was traditionally based on rice cultivation, horticulture, and small‑scale manufacturing. Community events included annual festivals celebrating regional agricultural products and seasonal traditions.
Transportation
Ōe was served by regional road networks connecting it to the prefectural capital, Yamagata City, and neighboring towns. The nearest railway stations were located on the Ōu Main Line, providing access to broader national rail services.
Current status
Following the merger, the former area of Ōe is now administered as part of Yamagata City. The name “Ōe” persists in local place names, such as Ōe‑cho (Ōe district) and in cultural references that preserve the town’s historical identity.
