Ławica is a residential neighbourhood and former village located in the western part of the city of Poznań, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland. Administratively, it forms part of Poznań’s Grunwald district (dzielnica Grunwald). The area is best known for housing Poznań–Ławica Airport, the city’s primary international and domestic airport.
Geography
Ławica lies approximately 3–4 km west of Poznań’s historic city centre. The neighbourhood is bordered by the districts of Jeżyce to the north, Stare Miasto to the east, and the villages of Tarnowo Podgórne and Kiekrz to the west and north‑west, respectively. The Warta River runs to the south of the area.
History

Early settlement – Ławica originated as an independent village documented in the 15th century. It was incorporated into the city limits of Poznań in 1925 as part of the city’s expansion.

Military airfield – In 1913 the Imperial German Army established an airfield on the Ławica plain. After World I, the airfield became a strategic asset for the newly re‑established Polish state.

Battle of Ławica – During the Greater Poland Uprising (1918‑1919), Polish forces captured the airfield from the occupying German troops on 6 January 1919, an event commonly referred to as the “Battle of Ławica.” The seizure provided Poland with aircraft and technical equipment essential for the formation of its early air force.

Civil aviation – The airfield was converted to civilian use in the interwar period and officially opened as Poznań–Ławica Airport in 1929. The airport has operated continuously since, undergoing successive expansions and modernisation, most recently in the 2010s.

Poznań–Ławica Airport (IATA: POZ, ICAO: EPPO) serves as the main air gateway for the Greater Poland region. It handles scheduled passenger services, cargo flights, and general aviation. The terminal building was renovated in 2012‑2015, increasing capacity and adding new passenger amenities. The airport is connected to the city’s public transport network through bus and tram lines, and it is situated adjacent to the Ławica railway station.

Demographics and development
As of the most recent municipal data (2023), the Ławica neighbourhood has a population of roughly 15,000 inhabitants. The area is characterised by a mix of low‑rise residential blocks built in the 1960s‑1980s and newer housing estates constructed after Poland’s accession to the European Union in 2004. Commercial development is centred around the airport vicinity, a retail park, and a few local shopping centres.
