Ērgļi Municipality

Definition
Ērgļi Municipality was a regional administrative division in Latvia, responsible for local governance within its territorial boundaries.

Overview
Ērgļi Municipality was located in the Vidzeme region of central Latvia. It existed as a municipality until administrative territorial reforms in Latvia led to its merger into a larger unit. In 2021, as part of a nationwide reform to consolidate local governments, Ērgļi Municipality was amalgamated into Madona Municipality. The administrative center of Ērgļi Municipality was the village of Ērgļi.

Etymology/Origin
The name "Ērgļi" is derived from the Latvian word "ērglis," meaning "eagle." Toponymic usage of animal names is common in Latvian geography, often reflecting local symbols, historical references, or natural features.

Characteristics
The municipality covered a rural area characterized by forested landscapes, small settlements, and agricultural land. It included several parishes and villages, with a relatively low population density consistent with many regions in central Latvia. Its economy was primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and small-scale local services.
