Etymology and History
The name "Čiflik" (also transliterated as Chiflik or Çiflik) has its origins in Ottoman Turkish, derived from the word "çiftlik," which historically referred to a landed estate, farm, or manor, particularly under the Ottoman land tenure system. These estates were often significant agricultural holdings or properties belonging to a prominent individual or institution. The prevalence of such place names throughout the Balkans indicates a strong historical legacy of Ottoman rule and its administrative and economic structures. The region, including the area of Čiflik, came under Ottoman control in the late 14th century and remained part of the Ottoman Empire until the early 20th century. Following the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), the territory became part of the Kingdom of Serbia, subsequently Yugoslavia, and since 1991, has been part of independent North Macedonia. The village's development is rooted in its agricultural traditions, likely evolving from or around one of the historical "čiflik" estates.
