Újezd pod Troskami is a municipality and village located in the Jičín District within the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It is situated in the northern part of the country, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the district town of Jičín.
Geography and Administration
The municipality lies within the protected landscape area of Bohemian Paradise (Czech: Český ráj). The name "Újezd pod Troskami" translates to "Újezd below Trosky," referring to its geographic position at the base of the hill featuring the ruins of Trosky Castle, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the region. The municipality comprises four administrative parts: Újezd pod Troskami, Čímyšl, Hrdoňovice, and Semínova Lhota.
History
The first written record of the village dates back to 1357. Historically, the settlement was part of the administrative and feudal structures associated with local noble estates, most notably the Hrubá Skála lordship. Like many settlements in the region, its development was influenced by its proximity to significant trade routes and the strategic importance of the nearby Trosky Castle during the Middle Ages.
Demographics and Infrastructure
As of the 2023 census data, the municipality has a population of approximately 300 inhabitants. The village is accessible via the I/35 road, which is a major transport artery in the Czech Republic. It is also served by a railway station on the line connecting the towns of Jičín and Turnov.
Economy and Tourism
The local economy is primarily characterized by small-scale agriculture, forestry, and services related to tourism. Due to its location in the Bohemian Paradise, Újezd pod Troskami serves as a transit point or a base for hikers and cyclists visiting the natural and historical sites of the region, including the nearby Libuňka river valley and the rock formations typical of the area.
